The sun just shut its door & the sky is going gray. I sit at the corner of 6th & Morrison and turn the volume on a portable speaker all the way up. Beside me is Cameron, dressed in head-to-toe camouflage and a second-hand leather jacket, listening with his eyes closed. You’d never know from a first look that he’s been homeless 26 years. The song fades out. “Damn, that guy has got soul” he says,
“I just got chills.”
By now it’s dark and we start walking. Cameron leads the way and we follow. He points out the secluded doorway where he sleeps, the regular cardboard characters on corners—they call it “spanging.” He’s lived in downtown Portland most of his life. Nearly 4,000 other people comprise the unhoused community of this city; globally, 100 million men, women and children live without a home.
Willis Earl Beal has known many lives, writing songs that open doors to each of them, and this night, Cameron took us through the dark waiting on the other side.
